CRYPVAL 1.2 DIRECTORY FORM CrypVal 1.2 is a simple Windows 10 computer database application that keeps track of your crypto currency investments, or of any other kind of investment. When you start the program, the first form that comes up is the Directory, and you are prompted to enter the name of a data file that you want to create, or to open one that you've already created with CrypVal1.2. CREATE A DATA FILE Since you're just starting CrypVal1.2 you have no data files established yet, so type in the name of a data file you want to create, or just invent one for learning purposes. You can add a '.txt' extension to it or not, but if you do, it can make it easier to display and find in the future. Click on the 'Create' button and a new window (form) will appear, and you're prompted to enter the date of this, the first record you're creating in the new database file. Once you've done that, you can hit the 'tab' key, or 'enter', and the focus will jump to the 'value (amount)' entry box. Enter the amount you've started this real or practice investment with. You'll notice that you've skipped over the red 'ESTABLISH' label. The first record in a new data file is automatically given the 'ESTABLISH' action (or transaction type) designation. You can now hit either the 'tab', or 'enter' keys to move the focus to the 'Submit' button. For speed of use, if you use 'enter', then just hit it again and the information you've just entered will be submitted (saved) to the data file. You can, of course, just click on the 'Submit' button directly. The form then disappears, and you're back at the original, Directory form. UPDATE At the Directory, click on the filename textbox again to put the focus there, and press the 'enter' key. Notice that the focus moves to the 'Update' button just below the textbox. Hit 'enter' again, and the 'Add To Data File' form comes up. This is done for swift entry as you will probably be updating the value of your investments more than you will be buying or selling them, especially for volatile crypto currencies. Now the red action box is displaying 'UPDATE', and proceed to enter the date and current value of the investment. If you press 'enter' again twice after typing in the value amount, your new information will be submitted quicky. The form will disappear and you'll be back at the original Directory form again. VIEW Click on 'View' to see the records you've just entered. You should have two-- the first one you've established the data file with, and the second one where you updated the value of the investment. You'll notice that on the top left of the form the name of the data file is displayed, and across the form in the upper right corner is the 'page' number. Any empty spaces on a page will be displayed as a cyan-colored box. You can have up to seven full pages of records in any given CrypVal data file, and each page holds 15 records. That makes a total of 105 records for any file. CrypVal won't allow any records to be created beyond that, and if you want to create more than that for any investment, you'll have to create (establish) another data file. You can have as many data files for an investment, or for any number of different investments, as you wish. Scanning the top of the columns on the page you'll see the record numbers listed on the left, then going across, the date that that record was entered or transacted, then its' Action (or transaction type) that took place (ESTABLISH, UPDATE, BUY, or SELL). The next column is the actual amount (value) of the investment on that date, and the last column is the Inc/Dec or Buy/Sell (Increase or Decrease, Buy or Sell amount)-- is the investment's change in value from the previous record. Click on the Exit button, or the 'X' in the upper right of the form to leave the page. BUY Once back at the Directory form, click on the 'Buy' button to enter the amount you want to buy more of the investment with. Once again on the 'Add To Data File' form that comes up, you'll see the 'date' and 'value/amount' textboxes to enter information in. The 'Action' box signifies you're buying more of the investment. Click on 'Submit', or press the 'enter' key twice after typing in the amount, and a new record will be created and you'll be returned to the Directory form. Click on the 'View' button again to see the record of what you've just entered. On the page, (the 'View Data' form that pops up), you should see the new row of information of the third record. It should be noted that the amount you entered to buy more of the investment is reflected in the 'Inc/Dec Buy/Sell' box at the end of the row. The 'Value/Amount' box shows the total amount that your investment is worth now after the purchase. PREVIOUS PAGE BUTTON Before you exit this form and return to the directory, notice that there's a 'Prev Pg' button that's deactivated to the left of the 'Exit' button at the bottom. If you have more than one page of data in a file (say you have twenty-five records-- they're on two pages), then that button will be activated so you can click on it and see the previous page or pages. CrypVal always takes you initially to the last page that exists in a file because that's where the latest information is. SELL Exit the form and return to the directory. Now click on the 'Sell' button. The entry form pops up, and enter the date and the amount you want to sell. Click on 'Submit', and back at the directory click on 'View' again. Similar to the previous 'Buy' record, the amount that you're now selling of the investment, is in the 'Inc/Dec Buy/Sell' box. Notice that it is a negative number, and displayed in red. That is to signify it's an amount that was sold. Know that if you update an investment and it's value has gone down, it will also be a negative number and appear in red. As in the 'Buy' record, the new-- in this case lesser value of the investment, will be in the 'Value/Amount' box. ADJUST VALUE/AMOUNT While you're still on the 'View Data' page or window, click on 'Edit' in the menu. You'll see two options in the list that drops down. The first one is 'Adjust Value/Amount'. Click on that. The familiar form that allows you to enter a new record into your data file comes up. This is for when you discover that your financial institution's number of what your investment is worth, does not match your own. If you agree with their number, you can enter it, and your records will align with theirs. Notice the message now at the bottom of the form with the yellow background. It tells you that to see the change you just made to your records, you have to exit the page and then click on the 'View' button again to refresh it. The new 'View Data' page/window that pops up will show the new 'Adjust' record you've just added. The 'Inc/Dec Buy/Sell' column for the record will show how much your records were off from the institution's. DELETE LAST RECORD Click on 'Edit' again, and when the menu drops down, click on 'Delete Last Record'. A small window appears telling you that the last record will be deleted, and will give you the number of it. You can click on the 'Cancel' button if you decide not to delete it. Click on the 'Continue' button, or hit the 'enter' key and the record will be deleted. A message in red will appear telling you so. Click on the 'Done' button, or hit 'enter' again and the form disappears. Again, you'll see the yellow-background message below on the page window telling you to refresh it to see the results. FILES BUTTON Now you're back at the Directory. Click on the 'Files' button at the bottom, and the Windows Explorer window comes up. It is set at 'C:', and you can see it in the address bar at the top of the Explorer window. 'C:' is your hard drive location, and to get to your data files you have to keep double clicking on the folders that keep appearing in the main window until you arrive at the one that your CrypVal data file is in. Double click on that folder to open it and see the data file you've created, along with the CrypVal1.2.exe application file itself. You've probably done this before to get to some files on your computer if you don't have a shortcut to them on your desktop or start menu. The resulting address that's in the Windows Explorer's address bar now is it's 'path'. Windows Explorer comes in handy when you want to see the names of your data files listed first, before opening any of them in CrypVal. If you use this method you will see the whole 'path' address in the file name entry box on the Directory form when you return to it. It may be easier for you to find the data files you've created if you give them a .txt (text) extension after the name of the file. If you've done that and don't see it in the File Explorer window, go to the box in the lower right corner of the window and make sure it's showing text files along with the other ones, or 'all files'. As mentioned above, the data file you've already created for the example above should be in the same folder that the CrypVal1.2.exe application file itself is in. So, when you open an already existing data file directly by typing it's name in the file name entry window on the Directory form-- just like you did when you created the file to begin with-- you don't have to type in the path address. FILE MENU OPTIONS At the page window, you'll notice that the only other option at the menu titles besides 'Edit' is 'File'. If you click on it, you'll see when the menu drops down all you can do there is exit the window. It functions the same as the 'Exit' button does at the bottom of it. The page will disappear, and you'll be at the Directory again. At the Directory, you'll notice only 'File' as a menu title. Click on that and three options appear. The first one, 'Open', opens up the Windows Explorer window same as the 'Files' button does below. The second, 'Adjust', allows you to adjust the 'Value/Amount' of your investment the same as it does under the 'Edit' title in the 'View Data' window. The last option on the menu is to exit the Directory window and the application completely. Don't worry about losing any new records you've created, or that any deleted ones will not stay deleted. CrypVal saves any changes to your data files that you've made, automatically.
